Growing up creatively repressed in every way, I had no clue of who I was or why I was here.
The journey of the soul is the responsibility of all humans, to find out why we are here and what we have to offer, what our unique blueprint is, and that has been my life for 25 years.
The gradual finessing of who I am and what I do has been my work.
I now am privileged to share my own story as a vehicle for others to move from repressed to full creative expression in my work as a Creative Strategist and Filmmaker.
As a mentor, I help others turn their true purpose into a career doing their life’s work, and also then to make them visible to the world through the power of storytelling and film.
My experiences in marketing, neuroscience, PR, film, TV, healing arts, quantum mechanics, shamanic work, and so much more enable me to see for another person what they cannot yet see for themselves, and then I help them make it happen.
How do you think we moved from ‘the age of information’ to the ‘age of creativity’?
“We are Drowning in Information, Starving for Knowledge. We are living in an age of information. Staggering amounts of information are collected, stored, and widely disseminated. Yet, we may be less informed and less knowledgeable than ever.” From Technology and Society.
I will audaciously put an amendment on that….I believe we are drowning in information and craving creative expression.
The age of creativity is at its essence about being more in communion with our heart wisdom, not a mind of wisdom.
People are done with the unbelievable amount of information that is out there, there are endless how-to-guides, free books, evidence papers, there is content overload… yet we are now craving the embodiment, the experiential the human, the sensual, the creative, the connected experiences, those that involve us being IN the experience rather than reading about it. We want to FEEL rather than read.
We want people to FEEL us rather than just SEE us. Humans are creative beings and we want to participate in our creativity and creation. Information lacks the US, creativity involves the US.
That is why film and video are so important, it’s the next best thing to being in person. I truly believe our souls come through the screen.
Why do you think filming/videos are so powerful?
For two reasons:
We in the media and visual communications arena have a very important responsibility when it comes to content creation.
Film, TV, video, is powerful. It is more important than ever before. Historically and even currently, we are driven by the almighty dollar, box office, and likes to the detriment of the psychology of humans. We need to care more about what we put out into the world, media psychology shows us that what we watch and listen to informs our psyche and cultivates and influences who we become, particularly young people. That is an enormous responsibility and one that I believe so many people are unaware of.
I believe that we can transmit our soul through the lens. We are inviting people into our world, it’s as close to being in person as possible.
Films are the most intimate and sacred way of telling our stories. I work with people on the soul story of their brand – the reason they do what they do. I only work with people who have a deep and profound reason they do the work that they do.
There is something inevitable about them working in the field they are, it is as if its ‘bechert’ (Yiddish word for fate)…written in the stars.
The trajectory of their lives has led them to this place.
Audiences are craving connection, authenticity and truth in communication – media, print, film and TV, we are over manufactured advertising and targeted
Creatives are so incredibly lucky: we have inside of us a beautiful dream of having our art whatever it may be, be seen by the world.
So we are open to being seen. I tell my clients and potential clients all the time: the world is aching for more stories. For me, I always go someone’s video always and hear what they have to say, I want to know who I am buying from, what their ethos is, where they come from, and most importantly what we have in common.
We don’t want the contrived stuff anymore, we want what is true.
Sharing ones story behind why they do what they do is so important as it creates the deepest style of connection and intimacy. I believe that intimacy is power. Hearing someone’s story about why they create their jewellery line, do their trauma coaching, design their health products, write their books and whatever it is you do, is a key marketing tool as well as a very powerful moment between the buyer and the seller. No longer do we have to rely on advertising to get our message out into the world.
I say to people tell your story and let us see your soul laid bare on screen, we promise we will not judge you and respect you.
How do you think people can get better at tapping into their creativity?
Creativity is energy, it’s life force, it’s the flow of energy that moves within us.
I have a free e-book that lays out nine practices how to access deeper levels of creativity and more authentic forms of inspiration, it in a unique and transformational way. To manage and focus your creativity rather than just wait for the inspiration to come, and to get into what is known as the flow state.
Dr Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (PhD) talks about achieving the flow state on a regular basis as a pure element of happiness.
By learning how to access the state of flow, you can boost your productivity, be more creative, and be happier, simultaneously. Sounds good right?
People experience flow when they are deeply engrossed in what they are doing. Writers feel it when they get swept away in the story, actors when they are in a role, and sportspeople welcome this genuinely sacred state when playing their game of choice
These practices are about getting into the flow state which produces next level creativity and how to manage this flow. This is why you are here; you want flow, elevated levels of creativity, connection and an expanded state of consciousness.
Is creativity something that can be cultivated?
Absolutely it is something that can be cultivated.
There is a traditional and well-beaten belief that suffering and creativity going hand in hand. I don’t’ believe in it anymore. A belief is just something that someone told us and we keep thinking over and over. It is just not true. Creativity can be born out of joy, happiness, ecstasy, fun and pleasure.
Being creative is a craving we all have, it is the very birthright of all humans to be creative, in essence, we come from creativity. Having the ability to tap into being creative in every moment, to have brilliant ideas and innovative approaches 24/7, and most importantly, to have the ability to birth those ideas into reality, is truly possible for anyone.
Creatives, entrepreneurs, healers, coaches, speakers, designers or those that want to make a living from their creative talents and gifts need to develop consistency and sustained creative output because your income depends on it. One can’t rely on just moments of inspiration or wait it out for the spark to appear.
So how do we make this happen?
From working as a Creative mentor & Filmmaker I have found it comes from a consistent routine, a set of repeatable healthy habits – creativity rituals if you will. These rituals, if you embrace them, can help you to consistently feel like you are in the zone, connected to your creative now.
What advice would you give your younger self?
No one else knows what they are doing either.
There is a belief that you are the most messed up person, and if others knew who you really were, they wouldn’t respect you, trust or like you. its just not true, there is no one out there that has it all together, no matter what Instagram or FB says. We are all making it up as we go along. Don’t follow anyone, or worship anyone… find your own inner guru.
What are 3 pieces of insight that you would you like to give to our readers?
1. Get to know your own inner being, your soul, your spirit – that is the best guide you will ever have. Spend as much time in nature meditating. Nature is the medicine of the spirit. Your body is a tuning fork for creativity, love, and truth. It is here that you need to do the work to make sure she is as clean and tuned in as possible, and that is through getting to know yourself and tuning in.
2. Find your own unique creative expression – that requires brutal honesty in looking at how you are living and working. I suggest the experience of a vision quest to deal with this.
3. Understand you are the centre of your own universe; you are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe. Read E-Squared by Pam Grout. You are powerful and mighty.
