Sisters Gracie and Sophie Tyrrell are the founders of Squirrel Sisters, a health and wellness company on a mission to help people make better and healthier choices more often. Their award winning on-the-go bars double up on flavour and are packed with real, honest, good-for-you ingredients with natural fruit sugars and are available in 4 delicious flavours: Cacao Brownie, Cacao Orange, Raspberry Ripple and Coconut Cashew.
Yes to delicious, no to compromising.
This week we caught up with Gracie and Sophie to find out more about their typical day and how they like to ‘treat their health’.
Tell us a bit about your job
Squirrel Sisters is a health and wellness company with a range of award-winning healthy snacks that are available across the nation in Waitrose, Morrisons, Ocado, Selfridges, Whole Foods, Planet Organic, BP M&S forecourts and we are about to launch with WHSmith.
We have had no investment to date and are an all female team. We have also published a cookbook, which was just named the top 9 best healthy cookbooks by The Independent.
We created our Squirrel Sisters on-the-go bars for people that are hungry for easy, energising, positive choices. Choices that feel good to make. Choices you don’t need to think twice about
We want to help you TREAT YOUR HEALTH… healthy doesn’t have to be tasteless or restrictive. It can be indulgent and delicious!
Our snacks are lovingly homemade. Life’s too short for second guessing what’s in your food. So we use only the best quality, honest (easy to say), real kitchen cupboard ingredients, which is why we’ve been certified by Sugarwise,an international authority for sugar claims.
What responsibilities does your job entail?
Owning and running our own business means we’re responsible for everything (especially as we are still at the start up level). We have split our roles to make things smoother- we are both accountable for different areas of the business but overall we make all decisions together.
How do you make sure you keep up with your busy schedule as well as prioritising your health?
Balance is so important… it’s so easy to burn out these days so we do take it seriously especially because we are a health and wellness company. We eat really well because we know that it helps us feel good and we both have ways that we like to wind down like going to a gym class or having a glass of wine with friends. If you’re tired then you won’t be productive and in order for the business to run smoothly we need to be feeling good, so we do a lot to make sure that we have a good work life balance.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Everyday is different but it usually starts in the office catching up on lots of emails, attending meetings and getting on with general day-to-day jobs to keep the business running.
How do you go about taking time off? What does a day off look like for you?
Luckily taking a bit of time off isn’t detrimental to the business because we are lucky in the fact that there are two of us. If one of us is away or taking a day off the other one is running the business. When we do take time off we are still on email but the out of office is on and we do try to enjoy the break. When we take time off it’s usually because we are going away on holiday.
Tell us about your lunch!
We both bring our lunch into work everyday- it saves money and means you can actually have something you really want rather than grabbing something off the shelves in your local supermarket. We usually rustle something up the night before and keep it fresh in a container (tupperware plays a vital part in our lunchtime ritual)! We always have Squirrel snacks on hand for a post lunch snack.
What are the best / worst aspects of your job?
The best part of our job is getting to work together. We get to bring our passion to life and do it together, which has been an incredible experience; supporting each other through the ups and downs and being there for each other through more stressful times. The other amazing thing about working together is that we completely trust each other and have each other’s best interests at heart, which is invaluable in business.
The worst part is that it never gets easier. Although it’s amazing running your on business it’s extremely difficult and non stop. You have to grow a thick skin.
How do you unwind after work?
It varies, we love seeing friends and family, going out for dinner and a glass of wine but also love going home and doing nothing, just relaxing and having a bath. We also love fitness so hitting the gym or going to a yoga class is one of our favourite ways to wind down.
How do you prepare for the next day?
An early night. Both of us really struggle when we are tired, we aren’t as productive so getting a good night is key to a successful and productive day.
Your favourite ritual when it comes to treating your health?
Getting home after a long day, putting on some comfy clothes, cooking a delicious meal and then relaxing in a salt bath with candles.
