Tell us a bit about One Planet Pizza – what are your pizzas?
One Planet Pizza is the UK’s first and leading frozen Vegan Pizza company! We’re a family-owned business dedicated to creating award-winning, premium pizzas that are both delicious and healthy – and also plant based. Lovingly made from scratch and hand crafted using only the finest ingredients, our delicious flavours include the Three Cheezly Margherita, Hawaiian, Funghi Feast and the Mediterranean Roasted Vegetable. Good for you, for the planet and for the animals.
What inspired you to start a vegan pizza company?
Our story started with a simple question asked down the pub over a pint of vegan friendly beer: “why isn’t there a great tasting vegan frozen pizza on the market?” At the time, Veganism had just exploded into the mainstream, and new products and services were quickly filling up the shelves – except for frozen pizzas.
Inspired by our dough-based revelation, my Dad (Mike) and I talked through the idea with another long-term vegan friend Tanya. Together, we came up with the idea of creating a range of classic vegan pizzas back in the summer of 2016. Three months later, the company was formed, and soon after we started the UK’s first ever crowdfunding campaign for a 100% vegan start-up. Three months down the line, we were selling our first pizzas to several local shops in the vegan friendly city of Norwich.
What does “One Planet Pizza” mean?
One Planet Pizza means quality, taste and ethics.
Our mission has always been to create pioneering products that are as healthy (for you and the environment) as they are delicious. We want people to enjoy proper food with natural ingredients, that’s also better for the planet. In a nutshell, One Planet Pizza is better for your health, better for the environment and better for the animals!
What skills did you come to the business with already and how has this helped grow your business?
We always say that whilst I bring the youth and energy to One Planet, Mike brings the experience to the table! Fortunately for me, Mike has been running his own business for many years prior to us starting up One Planet Pizza together, and his expertise is critical to the company. Above all else, what’s most important, is that we’re both passionate vegans who’ve always been hugely interested in nutrition and cooking throughout our journeys.
How have bloggers and online influencers helped you grow your brand?
We see bloggers as a pivotal part of our team! Right from the very start, we realised that the nature of working in a vegan movement relies on the support of an online family. As a small vegan start-up, we’ve always worked closely with influencers within our community. They love the brand and what we stand for, and we rely on them to spread the word about our pizzas and help others to discover them. We have a fantastic symbiotic relationship, working with influencers and bloggers as passionate about raising the standard of great vegan food as much as we do, and that’s why we’re always championing our ambassadors and favourite bloggers! When we’re about to release a new flavour or product, we make sure they’re the first to know and to try them.
What’s the most challenging thing about setting up your own vegan pizza business?
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to grow quickly, but with limited resources. We have always been confident the demand is there for us, and that our pizzas are among the best on the market, but getting the brand noticed and getting it on the right shelves is a challenge – especially when you’re a start-up company.
What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before you started?
We wish we’d known just how controversial the subject of pineapples on pizzas is. We could have spared ourselves a lot of heated debates about putting fruit on pizza by now!
What is the most worthwhile investment (time, energy, money) that you have made?
Getting to know other people within the community that are in similar situations and on similar paths and professional journeys. We’ve learnt so much from fellow small vegan business starting up their investments and projects around the same time as us. We see these relationships and friendships, and they are hugely valuable in terms of investing in!
What one failure are you glad you experienced?
I’m glad of all our failures because they’ve led us to exactly where we are now, but one that comes to mind, would have to be when we missed an expansion opportunity early on with a large retailer. However, in hindsight, we wouldn’t have been ready for this size customer and may have failed to deliver on orders. Fast-forward to now, and we’re much better prepared, with a better understanding of our production capacities to tackle such a challenge!
What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting their own business?
Find your niche and make sure it’s something you are really passionate about. You need to offer a product or service that’s either new, or better than anything else out there right now. Most of all, you’ll need to enjoy doing it!
What are you most excited by?
I’m incredibly excited to see just how mainstream veganism will become over the next few years. I’m looking forward to seeing more and more people reducing their meat and dairy, and becoming more conscious about their impact on this planet. I’m also excited by our future expansions, and seeing more and more customers give One Planet Pizza a try.
