Sharing to Instagram Stories has now taken a whole different meaning.
On Friday, November 30, an Instagram update brought the option to create a “close friends” list for those stories that you don’t want widely shared. Instagram says this new feature will help users share stories that are more personal with a smaller group of friends.
In 2017 Instagram had started testing a feature it then called “favorites” which was an attempt to reinvent the “friends’ list” and encourage people to share more by letting them post to a more limited group of their followers.
As more and more people have multiple accounts to share their “private life” with friends, Instagram has been testing more tools for private sharing.
Nearly 18 months later, Instagram’s twist on private sharing has arrived.
“Close friends” has said to be “reshaping the social dynamics on Instagram”.
How can you start using the new feature?
To create the list, users can navigate to their profile and access the new Close Friends List option from the menu. From there, users can see who to add to the list and can also edit that list. A separate tab contains suggested friends to add to the list (Instagram)
While Instagram says that users can’t request to be on your list, the friends you add to that list will be able to see that they are part of your Close Friends’ List.
Friends that are listed will see a green outline around your profile picture in the story carousel, and while viewing the story, will see a green badge that tells viewers not everyone is seeing that post.
How can you creatively use this feature?
If you are wanting to let some friends or peers know about a special offer, ask for help, or highlight something to your most loyal followers – this could be a great feature for you.
Your friends do not have to be, well, your friends. They can be ambassadors, followers or very special people you want to alert about something exciting happening around your brand. Careful though, this does not mean you should be spamming your favourite customers!
Like everything, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to sharing, just make sure you make the most of these new features – and check our Instagram at @hbloggerscom to see the feature in action.
