This week we’ve teamed up with Biomed to celebrate the launch of their digestive support supplement and to discover what it means to truly trust your gut. This is the first of three inspiring stories from people who have turned their dream into a reality.
Arjun Sofat is the Founder & CEO of Free Soul, a new generation lifestyle brand for women. Their range consists of nutritionist formulated protein powders, teas, and supplements designed for the female body.
When Arjun’s Mum used fitness as a stress outlet following a health scare in the family, Arjun noticed that the female supplements market lacked a genuinely innovative and empowering brand, so he quit his job in Investment Banking and started the Free Soul revolution in female wellness. Now in its second year of trading, Free Soul is stocked in retailers across the country and exports to 18 countries across the globe.

Tell us about a situation in which you had to ‘trust your guts’. What was the challenge or decision? What was the outcome?
Starting a business requires you to continuously do things for the first time, and so ‘trusting your guts’ is almost a daily necessity, as you’re not necessarily following a set path. For me, the biggest example of this was taking Free Soul from an idea to an actual business and making everything very “real”. This can be the scariest moment, as the first step is often the hardest, but you have to trust your gut. What has resulted is work that follows a passion and purpose, and so I’m always jumping out of bed, excited to get to work in the morning.
How has this changed your life?
Following my guts and launching Free Soul has totally transformed the way I think about life and work. I now know what it means to follow your passion, and work with purpose, and I get to experience joy in my job. That’s something that I wasn’t able to do in Investment Banking, and I wouldn’t have ever known the feeling had it not been for me trusting my guts.
Do you think gut health plays a role in our overall health and happiness?
Absolutely, the two are incredibly linked, which is why I’m very excited about Biomed’s digestive support supplement – because of the product’s effectiveness, it’s going to make a real impact to people’s standard of living. Good gut health means a healthy immunity, and effective digestion. With the two being so fundamental to overall health, the link between gut health and overall health is clear – and ultimately, to be happy, we need to be healthy. Recent studies have suggested that gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters which have a direct impact on mood, in case anyone needed more convincing!
How do you ensure you keep your gut healthy and happy day to day?
For me, variation in my diet is key. A healthy gut requires a diverse community of microbes, each of which prefer different foods, and to support this I ensure a lot of variety in the foods I eat
What’s your go to stress-buster when feeling overwhelmed?
Being in the fitness industry, it has to be the gym! For me, heading into the gym at 6am with my headphones on, and nothing else on my mind, is the single best way to release stress and to ensure that I’m heading into the office knowing that I’ve started the day well.
What advice would you give someone facing a tough decision?
Tough decisions are ultimately choices, and instead of looking at tough decisions as unfortunate and pressured situations, it’s helpful to look at them at opportunities to solve problems and carve out paths. Taking the time to recognise this will calm you down and allow you to make the best, and perhaps most creative, decision. And of course, follow your guts!
