Our skin deserves a treat every week. That’s why I encourage all of my clients to apply a weekly facial treatment at home. Whether they leave the mask on for 10 minutes or overnight, their skin is sure to benefit from the powerful healing ingredients. In addition to revealing a healthier complexion, masks help to prevent and may even cure many skin problems.
Working as an Advanced Skin Therapist I’ve gathered insider tips to help my clients get results from different types of masks. This guide will optimise the application at any time of the year. Whether you’re in the heat of summer or on the cold front, your skin will remain well hydrated and plump throughout.
The Benefits Start with Clean Skin
As with any facial treatment, when masking at home, always start with a thoroughly cleansed skin. After a long day, the only proper cleanse is a double cleanse. This removes not only make-up but also the dirt, oil and other environmental toxins your skin has been exposed to throughout the day. Start with an oil cleanser, then for the second cleanse, switch to a gel. Choose a cleanser that contains purified acids, such as L-lactic Acid; it supercharges all the benefits of the masks. Two favourites are Purity Solution and Purity Clean.
Masks to Address All of Your Concerns
Most of my clients complain of an oily T-zone and dry cheeks. Overall, they usually feel their skin is tight after cleansing. Since oiliness and hydration levels may be different for each area of the skin, it makes complete sense to customise treatments to suit different skin types and parts of the face.
Professionals often use multiple masks during a facial treatment, a skincare trend that has gone mainstream. Thanks to the rise of beauty influencers on Instagram, masking is here to stay!
Mask Like a Pro
Divide your face into four sections. Start with the lower half of your face; this is the area that is most prone to spots and random breakouts. For this area, you’ll use a mask that contains ingredients that draw out impurities and speed up the healing process. I like to use a Bentonite clay mask made with Salicylic acid and Sulphur from broccoli that can be used as an overnight spot treatment (applied directly to the spot) or applied on a regular basis to prevent spots from appearing in the first place. Salicylic acid also works well across the nose, unclogging and shrinking enlarged pores.
Many people with oily skin use scrubs; however, they don’t deliver the benefits that clients concerned with acne expect. Although you may feel as if the scrubbing is clearing away cell debris, if done incorrectly, these products could make breakouts and scarring worse. Harsh scrubs inflame the skin and strip away essential oils. Over time, this causes a combination of dehydrated skin (dry cheeks) and an even oilier T zone.
My top trick is to start with a gel mask made with fruit enzymes. It’s much gentler and a smarter choice for smoothing skin. Our plant-based formulation is ideal for all skin types, even sensitised skin. Surprisingly, purified acids, like L-lactic, improve hydration levels by increasing the production of natural moisture factors (NMF’s) and strengthening the skin’s barrier, which stops accelerated water loss through evaporation. Once again, nature has the best solution for fixing unhealthy skin!
In the area around the eyes, everyone wishes to treat or prevent lines, stop dehydrated skin and dark circles.
For more mature women, puffiness is also a concern. The skin around the eyes is very different from the skin on the rest of your face; it’s much thinner and has less oil. This is where you would avoid applying ingredients like salicylic acid. AHAs such as L-malic, derived from apples, is safe to use close to the eye area and has additional benefits, such as smoothing fine lines.
To help prevent and treat lines, apply a mask made with a family of ingredients called peptides. Peptides are broken down proteins that signal on a cellular level an increase in collagen and elastin.
Two key fibres that make skin structure firm and bouncy. You’ll notice the CosMedix Bio-Shape mask includes multiple peptides, all clinically proven to get results. It’s the first of its kind because it starts working to sculpt and lift after only two hours after application. If you are over the age of thirty or have mature skin apply it consistently every week. Cellular activity has to be stimulated regularly, just like your muscles need exercising at the gym.
Masking Tools to Watch Out For
Look out for the rise of “surgi-ceuticals” in skincare; it’s the next big skincare hit! You can also get to work using your hands and some easy tools. Leading facialist, Abigail James, demonstrates de-puffing facial massage techniques on her YouTube channel. To make it simpler, add a jade or rose quartz roller into your treatment. Once dry, simply roll over any mask. The cooling effect is simply divine! In no time you’ll be drifting towards skin nirvana.
