It’s time we delve into the life of a fitness blogger and nutritionist to see what goes on behind the content. We are taking a sneak-peek into Emily’s day to day life and practices that keep her happy, thriving and energetic. You can read all about our previous HBC Awards 2019 nominated bloggers and behind their content here.
Emily is the girl behind @healthwithem_, around 18 months ago she created her Instagram account to share what she is passionate about with an aim to help more people. Emily is a PT in a busy gym helping her clients reach their fitness and nutrition goals. Emily is passionate about health and fitness and helping her clients and followers learn to live a balanced healthy lifestyle, improve their relationship with food and incorporating ways to make fitness fun and enjoyable, which is what she tries to get across with her content.
If you could share with us who you are and what’s your mission, what would you say?
I am Emily and I go by @healthwithem_ on Instagram. I am a personal trainer, online coach and qualified in food science & nutrition. My mission is to show people how to make healthy living easy and make it part of your lifestyle to include nutritious foods in the diet in an enjoyable way, having a good relationship with food & incorporating fun exercise into your lifestyle and showing the benefits for long term health.
Would you consider yourself more of a blogger or an Instagrammer?
I have a blog on my website where I share some content, although I share most of my content on Instagram through posts or stories.
How do you choose the content that goes into your accounts?
I choose my content by sharing things that I believe will help others, and also love making foods and meals look pretty but using ingredients which are cheap and easy to find, to create yummy recipes. The majority of the recipes I share are to suit someone with a busy lifestyle who also wants to eat well as I myself don’t have hours to spend cooking on a day-to-day basis, so I try to include quick and easy meals to give my followers some inspiration. I try to share a mix of food pictures, recipes, workouts and exercise tips.
What is the process behind each post you produce?
I like to mix it up between food pictures for some simple inspiration, some recipes, workout videos, and exercise tips. I like to highlight the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, incorporating exercise and movement into your daily life while feeling good and enjoying the process. I try to get this across through a range of content on my Instagram.
What has been a career highlight so far?
My main career highlight so far has to be with my one-on-one clients and hearing their feedback after a while training with me. Seeing them improve in each session and how it is adding so much benefit to their life is amazing to see, and I’m so glad to be in a position where I can help them become stronger and fitter while also influencing their lifestyle.
Can you share a story about the biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
I can’t recall any one huge mistake; I know at the start it was more of a confidence thing for me and over the last year my confidence has come on hugely and I definitely have Instagram and my followers to thank for that.
Getting out of my comfort zone was the hardest thing for me at the start.
When it comes to health and wellness, how is the content you are creating helping to make a bigger impact in the world?
I hope my content is inspiring to people and encouraging them to make small changes to their lifestyle to improve healthy habits and educating those who are unaware of the why behind it all.
I love to help people become better versions of themselves while also enjoying the process of it all.
What is the biggest misconception about social media? What was the practice that has helped you with your strategy?
That it is all about the ‘number’ of followers you have. If you are putting out good content, educating people and sharing what you are passionate about, people will relate with that and interact with your content. You are better having 1000 followers who engage with your content, than having 100,000 who don’t engage. I believe if I can help at least one person with the content I put out, then I have achieved what I set out to do (read up on Instagram engagement and follower quality here).
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
I have to thank my family, my boyfriend and my friends for helping me along the way and encouraging me to keep going. At the start it was hard and I felt like I didn’t have the confidence to keep posting but being encouraged to keep it up by them really helped me keep going and improved my confidence so much. They have all been so supportive over the last year and a half since I started, and I couldn’t have done it without their help and support.
What do you think is the most important thing about working on collaborations with other influencers and brands?
I think in my opinion, when working with brands or other influencers that you stand by your own morals and only go with something that you truly believe in, would use yourself and that you think will benefit those following you in some way.
Who is your ideal collaboration with?
My ideal collaboration would be with either The Food Medic or Alice Liveing. I find both these women incredibly inspirational and both always put out such great content. I love how Alice represents women in the fitness industry, and she still works one on one with clients as well which makes her so relatable. Hazel is so inspirational in what she does, how she manages to balance her workload, Uni & on top of having a social life and incorporating exercise into a busy lifestyle, and also puts out such great educational content both on her website and through Instagram (read more about your ideal collaborations and influencer marketplaces here).
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start in the industry now?
Know what you stand for and know your values. Just be you and share what you feel is worth sharing with others. Don’t try to be like anyone else or share certain content just to please others.
