This week we chat to Vida Carmel, behavioural change coach with over 5 years experience helping people think differently and transform their lives and how she discovered her passion.
Having run rehabilitation programmes for young men in prisons as well as delivering an award winning wellbeing and engagement programme for LEON restaurants, Vida can provide you with simple tools for transformation. Vida is a NLP Master Practitioner. Neuro Linguistic Programming is an outcome-focused model based on how our minds and communication interact with each other. Vida works with individuals, companies, schools and charities to show people how to change patterns of behaviours and beliefs to get different results.
What was your eureka moment?
When I witnessed my first client entirely transform his experience of the world. He had been involved in a terrorist attack and was unable to be in specific places without re-experiencing the trauma of the event. Our work together culminated in him walking the route he had done that day in a state of calm confidence. When he realised he had achieved this he was ecstatic, it was as though a huge weight had been lifted from his chest, he physically transformed before my eyes. This was the moment I knew – this is what I am here to do.
Why will you last?
I will last because people will always be curious to discover how to make positive change. We all need to know how to be flexible, how to discover new abilities to respond to the changing world around us. There is always a choice and there will always be people who are interested in choosing to take agency and create the life they would love to live.
What are you most excited by?
Humans!! We are all free to create our own future, which is incredibly exciting because the possibilities are endless. Our ability as humans to continuously change and create is inspirational. We have huge potential to discover different ways of doing things and I am constantly excited by people I meet everyday as there is always the opportunity to discover something new.
How do you want people to feel when they work with you?
You will feel how you need to feel. It could be empowered to create change. Excited to be able to do what you would love to do. Curious to find out how. Free to express yourself. Free from any limitations with the space to move and reframe your experience. Calm and focused, with an ability to see clearly. You will feel alive!
What advice would you give someone thinking of starting a business on their own?
If you are thinking of starting a business then you already know you have something valuable to offer the world because you will have seen the difference it can make. And yet maybe you’ve still got lots of thinking to do. To go over all of the reasons why now isn’t the right time, and all the other important things you should be doing now instead.
What if you could accept that you’ve done all the thinking and it’s time to take action. What if you could just do it, right now? If you are feeling confused that’s useful because it means there’s something new and if it’s new then there’s space for growth and learning. How will you know what happens until you give it a go?
Do you have a mentor or are you one?
Both. We all need mentors and we all need to be one because there’s always more learning to do and share with others. Role models are so important. You become the people you surround yourself with. Look for people who inspire you in different ways. Have as many mentors as you like! You’ll discover something new from each of them. One of them might be a friend, just like Homer’s Mentor in the Odyssey. Mentor was one of Odysseus’ old friends who looked after his household and supported his son while Odysseus was at the Trojan War. It could be anyone. Ask questions and be curious. Connect and share with people and you’ll see how many more opportunities are created, for you and everyone else. And share your experience with people when they ask. Even if you think you are there to mentor someone else you’ll probably end up learning more from them!
What is the most worthwhile investment (time, energy, money) that you have made?
The most worthwhile investment I have made is regular acupuncture. It was my way back to health when my body shut down from exhaustion a few years ago. Acupuncture showed me how to reconnect with my body and understand what I need to give myself in order to nourish my energy. It gives me a way to check-in with myself and to be aware of what is going on inside me. My other investment is trapeze. Trapeze allows me to be present in my body. It gives me a way to express myself in different ways and to jump into the chaos – quite literally jumping off a platform and flying though the air. It allows me to get out of my head and into my body, almost like a movement meditation.
