The festive season is nearly upon us and as much as we all love to drink, dance and be merry, we can’t quite say the same for the next morning. We’ve teamed up with Link Nutrition to share some top tips on how to survive the party season.
The lack of sleep, dehydration, and cravings for greasy, unhealthy foods can leave us feeling groggy and rather worse for wear the next day – which isn’t ideal with a 9am meeting looming. But what if we told you that it didn’t have to be quite so bad?
We’re not promising a miracle hangover cure (sadly)
… but if you follow even a few of our 5 party season survival tips, that 9am meeting may just be a breeze.
First and foremost… BALANCE. We can’t stress it enough. You can have too much of anything – even a good time! Conversely, saying no and staying in while the girls are all out dancing the night away won’t make you feel good either. It’s actually been scientifically proven that social interactions have the ability to change the neuronal activity in your brain, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety and increasing feelings of happiness and calm. So, even science agrees, having some fun now and then is actually good for you.
Hydration really is key. Keep hydrated throughout the day and make sure to take in the NHS-recommended 1.2 litres of fluid – water is your best option (about six to eight glasses). Tea and coffee can count towards your daily intake but they both have a diuretic effect, so we’d suggest opting for herbal tea or no added sugar squash if you’re not a big fan of water. On the night of the party there’s nothing to say that you can’t alternate between an alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage too – not only will your body thank you for it in the morning, but you will also be able to last a lot longer during the night ahead.
To fail to plan is to plan to fail… remember that classic secondary school teacher saying? They may not have been referring to planning your nights out (sorry Mr. Edwards) but it really does apply here too. If you make sure to get plenty of sleep in the lead up to an event, one late night is less likely to leave you feeling fatigued.
If you need help falling asleep and want to improve your sleep quality, why not try our Food Based Night complex? We use only the most effective and 100% natural ingredients to help reduce tiredness and fatigue and give your body a proper chance to recover overnight. Our sleep formula contains magnesium, scientifically proven to improve sleep quality as well as glycine, which again, has been proven to promote falling asleep more easily and improve sleep quality. One Japanese study found that when a group of volunteers took glycine before bedtime, compared to placebo, their feelings of ‘fatigue’ and ‘liveliness’ had significantly improved.
Dependent on the event, either make sure you have a good, nutritious meal beforehand to set you up for the night ahead or, arrive on time for canapés and opt for the least processed and beige-looking options (cucumber sliders and caprese kebabs are our favourites). Generally speaking, the more colourful the canapé, the healthier it is.
While most people know that getting boozy leads to a depletion in electrolytes and minerals due to the diuretic effect of alcohol, a lesser known consequence is the diminishment of your vitamin B stores. B vitamins are essential substances that cannot be made by the body (either in adequate amounts or at all) and consequently need to be taken in from the food that we eat.
The B vitamins aid the body in a whole host of ways – from maintaining healthy cognitive function to boosting energy levels. One way of replenishing these levels could be by eating foods such as eggs, liver or peas – but, not sure if we’d fancy that the morning after. Another way could be by supplementation. Our Food Based B complex goes above and beyond just supplying the 8 essential B vitamins. Our blend also contains the B vitamins with their naturally occurring co-factors – ensuring that the active ingredient is delivered as it would be in food, enabling the body to recognise it more effectively.
