Do you know how many muscles it takes to… Run?
How about how many muscles are actually in your body?
Well, in case you were wondering, it takes 99 muscles to run, 155 to cycle, 35 to kiss and at least 10 to raise a single smile! There are an astonishing 657 muscles working hard to power your entire skeletal frame. Our muscles give us energy and life; they keep us breathing and keep us going. Treated well, they keep us lean and life ready.
You use your muscles every minute of every day – not just when you’re lifting weights in the gym – yet many of us only think of our muscles when we damage them, want to grow them, or start to lose them.
Upbeat Active are on a mission to make a change to the way we think about our muscles.
Introducing the #657challenge: a social campaign that aims to get pretty much all your muscles moving in order to raise awareness of the importance of muscle health.
With a willingness to encourage the nation to keep their muscles healthy, Upbeat Active have partnered with the Muscle Help Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our muscles.
The Muscle Help Foundation’s focus is on “providing life-changing experiences for those whose muscles are broken,” says MHF’s CEO and founder Michael McGrath. McGrath himself was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 18 and yet is the first disabled person to have reached both the North and South Poles.
In the UK alone, more than 70,000 people have muscular dystrophy or a related condition. There is no cure or treatment to reverse the deterioration. It’s a cruel and unforgiving disease.
Speaking out about the social campaign, McGrath says “We’re hopeful the #657challenge will bring attention to muscular dystrophy and fundraising with Upbeat Active will help the charity move closer to its goal of delivering 657 ‘Muscle Dreams’ to children and young people — that’s one for every muscle in the human body.”
You may already be familiar with Upbeat Active: they create delicious whey protein drinks – packed with a huge 20g of protein per bottle – that fuel your 657 muscles so you can stay healthy and active for life.
Upbeat Active hope to inspire everyone to make positive changes in their lives and the lives of others, powered by great nutrition and a fun-filled active lifestyle. They believe that an overall healthy lifestyle starts with healthy muscles.
And there are many other benefits to Upbeat Active drinks too, as in-house Nutritionist Sophie Enever shares:
“Upbeat Active comes straight from the source— in other words, the cow,” says Enever. “Whey protein, our main ingredient, is a natural liquid by-product that comes from milk during the cheese making process. We use this fresh liquid whey, never reconstituted from powder, because it has a great balance of nutrients. It’s a high-quality complete protein, meaning it contains all nine of the essential amino acids necessary for our dietary needs, it provides a small amount of dairy fats and naturally occurring sugars for energy.” Each 330ml bottle provides 17% of your daily calcium needs and contains only naturally occurring sugars from fruit and whey (called lactose, a slow-release sugar from milk).
So, how can you get involved?
You can help to inspire people to make positive changes in their lives and the lives of others by getting involved with the #657challenge.
In order to complete the #657Challenge, create a 10-15 second video on Instagram in which you fill a glass with milk (or maybe just water!), hold it on top of your head, cross your legs to sit down, then drive back up to standing without spilling any of your drink: a physical manoeuvre designed to use every muscle in your body and much more challenging than you might think! Post your video alongside the hashtag #657Challenge, tag 3 people to complete the challenge, and donate by texting ‘MUSC13 £5’ to 70070.
