Essentialism: Doing Less but Better
The Way of the Essentialist involves doing less, but better, so you can make the highest possible contribution.
Greg MC Keown – Essentialism
In Essentialism, Greg McKeown draws on experience and insight from working with the leaders of the most innovative companies in the world to show how to achieve the disciplined pursuit of less.
The Way of the Essentialist isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s not about getting less done. It’s about getting only the right things done.
It’s about challenging the core assumption of ‘we can have it all’ and ‘I have to do everything’ and replacing it with the pursuit of ‘the right thing, in the right way, at the right time’.
It’s about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us.
One of my favourite parts of the book can be extrapolated by this takeaway: “If you take one thing away from this book, I hope you will remember this: whatever decision or challenge or crossroads you face in your life, simply ask yourself, ‘What is essential?’ Eliminate everything else.”
If you know you can do anything, but should not do everything, I definitely recommend you checking out Essentialism by Greg McKeown.
What’s your One Thing?
In order to define what’s essential, we need to find that ‘one thing’ that makes us tick. The truth is very simple: we have lost our ability to filter what is important and what isn’t. Psychologists call this ‘decision fatigue’: the more choices we are forced to make, the more the quality of our decisions deteriorates.
This is where The One Thing is a great listen to get you started into your streamlined path. You may be wondering, is this another business book about a concept that can be summed up in 1 sentence? Yes, you are right. What is that one thing that stands between you and your goals? The one thing that will get you extraordinary results in every situation?
Just like in Essentialism, the ones that will reap the rewards are the ones that acknowledge and build their lives, not around novelty and breadth, but meaning and depth. This is why clarity is key to being able to come back to a strong mission and goal in life. The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan is a book I come back to again and again, and I would always recommend.
