Talida from Hazel and Cacao shares with us her typical day.

Hi my name is Talida. I work as a dental hygienist in Townsville and have previous studies in Biomedical Science. I started a plant based food blog as a response to being ill for several years. I found healing through food and lifestyle and am hoping my blog can help others do the same.

My typical day

I think my typical day will start to look very different soon, since I am cutting back my work hours and will have a lot more time to work on my blog, but for the moment it goes something like this:

I wake up at 6:30 am and will usually lie in bed staring at my social media on my phone for 15 minutes. The light from my phone actually helps me wake up since I am not a morning person at all! The first thing I do when I get up is have a big drink of water with my cell food drops (liquid supplement) while I read my bible and do morning worship. I will then do a my quick 5 minute stretch routine and if I have time, I’ll do a few jumps on my skipping rope to get a little bit of cardio in at the beginning of the day. I then go and get cleaned up, put on my uniform and get ready for work before grabbing a quick breakfast.

My breakfast is usually something quick like granola and vegan yoghurt with fruit, a big smoothie, vegan overnight oats or chia pudding that I have made the night before. I always have fruit, whole-grains and some sort of nuts/ seeds for breakfast and I love to add in some superfoods for breakfast too.

Then its a mad rush out the door to get to work on time!

I come home for my lunch break. The beauty of living in Townsville is that everything is close; it only takes me 5 minutes to get home and I prefer to eat lunch at home because it gives me a chance to catch up on emails, write some scripts for my husband’s business and sometimes even write up an occasional blog post or two, depending on how much time I have.

Lunch is usually a hearty salad that I have already prepared, something like a lentil and millet salad, chickpea and pumpkin wholemeal pasta salad, pumpkin or sweet potato quinoa salad or falafel salad.

If I don’t have anything prepared I will have 2 big salad sandwiches or a quick bruschetta on wholemeal sour dough bread. I always finish off lunch with a few pieces of raw dark chocolate.

When I get home from work around 5:15, I prepare a fresh vegetable juice while I wait for my husband to get home from work. We have our juice and go for our evening walk over the hill and along the beach, where we catch up on our days. We usually stop by the grocery store to pick up what we need for dinner and I get started on dinner as soon as we get back. The only time we don’t do this is when I go to a pilates class instead.

Dinner is usually a veggie pasta, a lentil or veggie curry with brown rice and home made naan bread, tempeh or tofu stir fry, home made veggie pizza or more often than not, its potatoes! We love potatoes with a big salad and polenta. For dessert we usually have whatever healthy blog creation I have stashed  in my freezer. If there is no dessert I have some more raw chocolate.

We eat dinner while watching a couple of episodes of whatever we are into on Netflix (at the moment its star trek, yes I know..) and then after that it’s back to work! My husband is finishing up jobs at home while I am writing blog posts, scheduling social media posts for my blog as well as my husband’s business, and researching. We generally go to sleep quite late because we never finish working on time, but we love what we do so we don’t really mind – besides, we are huge night owls. I don’t think we quite get enough sleep but we do our best to catch up on the weekends.

We do absolutely no work from Friday evening to Saturday evening so we sleep a lot then, or use the time to catch up with some friends. We are very lucky that we have been able to make work our hobby. Blogging, cooking and writing articles is my hobby and I love every moment of it! The only other hobby I really have is doing a lot of scientific research on health, travelling and taking lots of photos!

My favourite quote

I am not really the type of person that gets motivated by quotes or positive affirmations. I think the one thing I need to remind myself is to “have no fear”. After struggling with anxiety for many years, I have seen how fear can limit potential, so I just need to remind myself that so much more can be achieved without fear!
