“Positive: full of hope and confidence, or giving cause for hope and confidence.”

Life is not always smooth sailing; struggles from money, relationships, sickness or a unfulfilled career, can take a toll on your health, wellbeing and mood. This is life, sometimes it’s amazing, and everything is going perfect… and sometimes things we don’t expect come out of the blue.

Being positive doesn’t mean your life is always rainbows and butterflies; positive people have real life problems, they get upset, angry and suffer, but they have resilience and fight for what they believe in. It’s not about having your head in the clouds, thinking everything is just perfect, and ignoring troubling issues when life gets tough, it’s holding yourself accountable for your emotional state and being aware of your thoughts and feelings.

The key to getting through tough times and no so great moments, is to have a positive attitude. Switch the negative mentality to a more optimistic, hopeful one.  To put it in perspective, what you focus on expands; your thoughts create your reality.

“Being a positive person can truly transform your outlook and the way you respond to events in life. Never forget that you have the choice to be positive!”

Here are 5 steps to becoming a positive person:

Switch your negative thoughts and attitudes to more positive ones

Pay attention and be aware of your thoughts and attitude. If you are constantly complaining, moaning, making mountains out of mole hills, well that’s exactly the energy you are going to get back! Even when life is a little grey and not how you wish it was, you just need to train your brain to be more optimistic, choosing to look on the bright side of life.  When you notice yourself having a negative thought, replace it with three positive ones immediately and watch your mood go from bla too brilliant in minutes.

Affirm positive thoughts

The power of positive affirmations is life changing. By affirming your thoughts, you instantly shift your mindset to believing the thought is already happening in reality. Affirming your thoughts and beliefs has such a positive impact on your emotional and mental health. If you want to lose weight, tell your self, “I am strong and healthy”, if you want to strive in your career, remind yourself “I am a success”, if you need a confidence boost, remind your self how beautiful, amazing and talented you are and so on. Affirm what you want and say it from the heart often. Wake up with great thoughts, affirm again mid day, and once more before you go to bed.

Express gratitude

Adopting an attitude of gratitude is extremely important when becoming a positive person. Counting your blessings and expressing gratitude for the simple things in life like having a warm home, food on the table, clothes to wear, your health, a loving family, blue skies, or a morning walk with your dog can have a profound effect on your positive mentality. Just simply giving thanks every day to moments, memories, loved ones, etc is a good place to start. If you catch your self wishing you had that bag, or that car, or the better job, or the better wardrobe, or better partner etc, you will never be content. You’ll always be on the hunt, missing the good moments and best things in your life that are actually right in front of you. Like I mentioned in the beginning, what you focus on expands, so if you are always thinking and dwelling on what you don’t have, you will only get more of that! Give thanks, appreciate what you have today and you will attract more of that… not to mention, you’ll feel more positive, hopeful, happy and optimistic too.

Live in the present

Simply be here now for the moment. Try not to fret about the future or dwell on the past; slow down and enjoy the present.  Yesterday is gone and the future is not here yet! By living in the NOW, you will begin to shift that negative attitude to a positive one, because living in the NOW, makes you focus your thoughts on the importance of the present. Of course we all have those moments, perhaps before you go to bed, or on your way to work where you think ‘what if’ or ‘why did I do that?’.  Dwelling on these things  will not benefit you in anyway. It’s time to learn to get in the driving seat and be in control of your own thoughts and mind.

Surround yourself with positive people

These people will inspire you to be the best version of you!  The people in your life have a huge effect on your energy, decisions, memories, and moments. They can either be radiator or drains (as I like to call them).  You should surround yourself with people that are uplifting, nurturing, supportive, genuine, kind, sincere, positive, loving and wholesome: these real relationships will lift you up, inspire you, and bring the best out of you. People who are down, negative or complain a lot will zap your energy, kill a good vibe, and just simply won’t add any value to your life! Of course, when times are tough and a family or loved one is in need of shoulder to cry on, this is normal and you should be there for them. However, if this person is always complaining, negative and a soul sucker, than be aware of the amount og time you give them. Time is precious and life is short; you are human too and need to think of your own needs.

Your thoughts, actions and  deeds, either hinder or help you become a positive or negative person. It is only YOU who can train your brain to think and act positively.
