Being a blogger can be so rewarding.
We forge new relationships with others, we have the outlet to express ourselves and get to work with new and exciting brands, but it’s not always easy. If, like me, blogging is a hobby and you try and fit it in around a busy day job it can be difficult to stay consistent; sometimes the ideas just stop flowing, so here are my top tips for breaking through that block and getting back on the blogging bandwagon.
Take yourself out of your comfort zone
Put yourself into a new environment for inspiration. It may be that you’ve exhausted all of your blog post ideas because you’re doing the same thing day in, day out and not giving yourself the opportunity to find new inspiration. If I get stuck in that rut I like to just do something I’ve never done before. Book an event you’ve never been to, buy some food you’ve never tried, read a book or blog you’ve never read before. Inspiration tends to come to me when I least expect it, so don’t focus on finding blog post ideas, focus on just doing something different that you enjoy. Start experiencing things and I guarantee the ideas will start to flow. I have a few standard formats of posts – for example a recipes, reviews, 5 ways to…, or workouts – so these new ideas can then be slotted into one of these categories!
When you feel it, act on it
Sometimes you do just really feel in the mood to blog. All of a sudden, you have about 30 different blog post ideas, and whilst it may not happen often, I really try to seize this moment! You don’t have to write the full post, but I tend to grab my notebook and write down a quick summary of what I want the post to be about, any key points and when I’d like to write it by (especially if it’s got a particular theme to it, say if it would fit well at Christmas!).
That might mean one day of a weekend I sit and write loads and loads of posts which I can then post gradually over the next few months, but it saves wracking my brains for post ideas last minute and means I generally feel much more organised and on the ball.
Other bloggers I’ve met over the last year have become really great friends. There’s no need to be in competition with each other, we will all do better if we work together! So speak to your blogger friends and collaborate, they might have a great idea for recipes, interviews or joint blog posts. You’ll probably find that when you’re having writer’s block, they are full of ideas and vice versa, so use each other and swap ideas as much as you can. Just make sure it’s a two-way street and you don’t end up taking lots of other peoples’ ideas without lending some of your own!
Ask your followers what they’d like to see
Whilst a blog is great for personal growth and can be very therapeutic, one of the main reasons for having a blog is to engage with your readers and keep them coming back for more. So if you’re struggling for ideas on what to say then ask what they’d like to hear about, run a poll on Twitter or Facebook, or just ask for people to comment on your Instagram or blog. This is also a good way of finding out which posts people aren’t interested in, so can be a way of adapting your posts to suit what people love to see.
Take a break
It may be that you are simply just overworked and you should take a break. There is no harm in knowing when to rest, just so long as you don’t quit. Give yourself as much time as you need to feel back to your usual self and I guarantee you’ll be back on top blogging form. It goes back to the first point in that your inspiration is likely to come when you’re not actually looking for it, so a little time off won’t do anybody any harm. Blogging shouldn’t become a chore that you resent because you’re forcing yourself to sit at your laptop for hours on end, so come back to it when you’re ready and raring to go!
